GOOGLAlphabet Inc.
SOTP focus with DCF & Graham-Dodd

Q3 Results on Oct 28: What Happened
Alphabet reported after the close on Oct 28. On Oct 29 the stock closed at $283.82 (−12.6%) on 4.4 times its usual volume.
- Cloud doubles. Google Cloud $30.71bn (+103%), operating income $11.1bn at a 36.2% margin (prior year 23.7%). Backlog $561bn (Q2: 514), more than 55% of it to be recognized within 24 months.
- Search slows. Search & other $63.35bn (+12% after +17%), YouTube ads +9%. Total revenue $127.6bn (+25%), just below consensus; adjusted EPS $2.67 versus $3.02.
- Cash flow turns negative. Capex $51.4bn (prior year 24.0), free cash flow −$9.1bn. So far in 2026 about $76bn of new bonds and $43bn of new shares, no buybacks. Alphabet expects capex to increase “significantly” in 2027.
- Equity stakes. An $8.7bn valuation loss (mainly SpaceX) cuts GAAP EPS to $2.12 (≈ −$0.55 per share).
Verdict: Growth convinces, the cost of growth and search do not – after the drop, the cloud is no longer fully priced in.
Fundamentals vs. Technicals
Fundamentals: growth accelerating, cash flow negative
Revenue +16% (Q3/25) → +25% (Q3/26); the cloud now delivers more than a quarter of operating income. Operating margin has declined since Q1 (36.1% → 31.8%) on data center depreciation, and free cash flow has fallen three quarters in a row. Long term, ROIC is stable around 22% and revenue per share has grown ≈ 20% p.a.
Technicals: fresh death cross, oversold
Price below the SMA50 ($340.24) and SMA200 ($340.62), death cross on Oct 29, RSI 22. Weekly SMA10 below SMA40 since Oct 26. Long term above the SMA100 ($265) and the 200-week line ($202). Elliott: daily and weekly wave 3 down (targets $272.76 and $233.10), weekly long a corrective wave 2.
Valuation: All Models at a Glance
| Model | Bear | Base | Bull | Base vs. price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SOTP (Q3 segments ×4) | $208 | $295 | $377 | +3.8% |
| DCF (FCF-based, WACC 10.1%) | $126 | $212 | $355 | −25.4% |
| Graham-Dodd (op. EPS $10.55) | – | $221 | – | −22.0% |
WACC: risk-free rate 4.98%, beta 1.21, equity risk premium 4.46% → cost of equity 10.38%, WACC 10.06%. SOTP: Services incl. corporate costs $126.1bn operating income × 12 / 16 / 20x, cloud $44.4bn × 20 / 30 / 40x, Other Bets −41 / 0 / +50 $bn, equity stakes (book value $135bn) × 0.5 / 1 / 1, net cash $105bn. DCF on TTM revenue of $471bn with FCF margin 4.2% → 15 / 20 / 25%; the price needs a ~28% target margin (2021–2024: about 20–27%). Graham-Dodd uses operating EPS because GAAP earnings are distorted by equity-stake effects.
Key Chart Levels
Support: 12-month low ($270.00), March low ($274.00) and the daily Elliott target ($272.76) – a confluence zone. Below that, the weekly SMA100. Resistance 1: 23.6% Fibonacci of the decline from the all-time high ($402.12). Resistance 2: SMA50 and SMA200 (both ≈ $340). Chart levels, not a trading recommendation.
Context Check (Macro)
The VIX is in its normal range at 17.2 – the sell-off is stock-specific. The US 10-year yield (4.98%) matters more now that Alphabet increasingly finances its investments with bonds and new shares.
The market is currently valuing AI investment by cash flow, not by growth: it is pricing the risk that costs rise faster than returns. Next catalyst: Q4 results with the 2027 capex figure, early February 2027 (date unconfirmed).
The Devil's Advocate
“A $561bn cloud backlog at a 36% margin is not a cost problem, it is a delayed profit stream.”
More than 55% of the backlog turns into revenue within 24 months. If the cloud margin holds above 35%, today's investments are funded by tomorrow's returns.
At 16x for Services, the price values the cloud at only ≈ 27x operating income – while it grows more than 100%.
If search slows further, the funding source fades exactly when 2027 capex could head towards $300bn. Already in 2026, funding comes from debt and new shares rather than cash flow.

The current state “below SMA200 and RSI oversold” has often been a rebound signal for Alphabet (hit rate 82 / 76 / 70% after 5/10/20 days vs. a 57 / 58 / 61% baseline) – but on only n = 79 days in a few episodes, so it is anecdotal. The weekly Elliott count (wave 3 down, target $233.10) is trend-aligned and hits at 57.1% – right at the trend baseline (57.3%).
