SpaceX Stock: Starlink, AI and Starship – What the Price Implies After the IPO
SPCXSpace Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX)
SOTP primary, DCF & Graham-Dodd supporting
Three segments reported separately (Starlink, AI/xAI, Space) → sum-of-the-parts as the primary model. On today's run-rate revenue this yields only $27 / 43 / 70; on 2027 consensus revenue $92 / 135 / 179. DCF $16 / 67 / 201, Graham-Dodd (2027e EPS) $56 / 84 / 128.
Update Oct 16: Is the analysis still current?
The analysis dates from Oct 9 (close Oct 8: $160.57). No new quarterly figures since – the fundamental and valuation sections stand. Technically, however, a key level has given way:
- Price down 9.1% to $146.03. This breaks the 61.8% retracement ($147.7) we had named as support, as well as the 50-day SMA ($148.2). Per the analysis, a break below ~$147 points more towards the August rebound being only a B-wave – the bullish reading (new impulse) is weakened.
- Momentum has turned. The early-October MACD bullish cross has been undone (MACD 1.71 below signal 3.69), RSI 43.9. Next zone: lower Bollinger band at $138.4.
- Triggers. Weakness in AI infrastructure names (problems at CoreWeave, Oct 14) weighs on the AI segment narrative, plus the Barclays note on a possible Tesla-SpaceX merger (SpaceX would effectively be the acquirer, ~0.7 SPCX per TSLA). VIX up from 15.2 to 20.0.
- Valuation gap narrower. After the decline the price sits only 8% above the SOTP base case on 2027 consensus (previously 19%). It remains far above every run-rate model.
Verdict: The analysis is current enough, but the technical section has shifted towards caution. Next dates: Q3 results ~Nov 3 (first positive EPS expected, +$0.16) and the expiry of the 180-day lock-ups from around Dec 9.
Fundamentals vs. Technicals
Fundamentals: hypergrowth, cash burn
Q2 revenue $7.81bn (+92%, consensus beaten by 15%): Starlink $4.29bn (+66%, 12m subscribers), AI $2.56bn (+247%, EBITDA positive for the first time), Space $0.96bn. Near break-even operationally (EBIT –$0.14bn), but FCF of –$26bn in H1 on capex for AI data centres – funded from ~$100bn of IPO and bond cash.
Technicals: too little history for certainty
Only about 87 trading days since the Jun 12 IPO – no SMA200, no 200-week line, no robust backtest. After the crash to $108 (Aug 5) came a rebound to $172 that is now retracing. Without an established long-term trend, any short-term signal carries elevated risk.
Valuation: all models at a glance
| Model | Bear | Base | Bull |
|---|---|---|---|
| DCF (WACC 12.5 / 11.4 / 10%) | $16 | $67 | $201 |
| SOTP run-rate (Q2 × 4) | $27 | $43 | $70 |
| SOTP 2027e consensus (EV/sales 10 / 15 / 20x) | $92 | $135 | $179 |
| Graham-Dodd (2027e EPS $2.04) | $56 | $84 | $128 |
The range shows the core problem: on today's revenue SpaceX is extremely expensive (EV/sales TTM ~92x); on 2027 consensus revenue ($115bn, +155%) it is only ~18x. The price assumes the 2027 revenue explosion happens and then continues at a high pace for years (implied ~76% initial growth from 2028 at an 11.4% WACC). Terminal value share in the DCF base case: 77%.
Key Chart Levels
Support 1: lower Bollinger band (as of Oct 16). Resistance: 50% and 38.2% Fibonacci of the $211 → $108 move; the price was rejected at $172 on Oct 6. Broken: $147.7 (61.8%). Chart levels, not a trading recommendation.
Context Check (Macro)
More than three quarters of SpaceX's value sits in the terminal value – making rates the most important macro lever. The 10-year Treasury was 5.22% at the analysis date and 5.10% on Oct 16. SpaceX also funds part of its capex programme with bonds ($25bn), so higher rates make that directly more expensive.
The VIX rose from 15.2 to 20.0 within a week. The previously low VIX priced in little protection – exactly the environment in which negative surprises (lock-ups, doubts about AI capex) hit harder. Dates: Q3 results ~Nov 3, 2026, lock-up expiries from around Dec 9, insider lock-up June 2027.
The Devil's Advocate
"On run-rate SpaceX looks absurdly expensive – on 2027 consensus the EV/sales multiple drops from ~92x to ~18x. Looking only at today misses the growth."
Revenue +92% vs. Rocket Lab +62%, gross margin 52% vs. 37%, operating margin –1.8% vs. –24.6%. Since the IPO SpaceX has clearly beaten the space ETF (–20.5%) and Rocket Lab (–33%).
Starlink earned a $4.4bn segment profit on $11.4bn of revenue in 2025, and operating cash flow has risen for years ($4.5bn → 5.8bn → 6.8bn). The AI segment is EBITDA-positive for the first time.
The 30 days before the analysis saw mostly target increases (Oppenheimer $280, Susquehanna $173) and new Buy initiations; Q3 is expected to bring the first positive EPS. ~$100bn of cash secures the funding.

|---|---|---|---|
Basis: 2027e consensus revenue $115bn, net cash ~$60bn, ~13.2bn shares (diluted). For comparison: Rocket Lab trades at ~50x sales, Redwire at ~4.6x. At $90bn of revenue (the DCF bear case) and 15x you get roughly $107.
| Market cap | ~$1.9tn |
| Revenue Q2/26 | $7.81bn (+92%) |
| Gross margin | 52% |
| FCF H1/26 | –$26bn |
| Cash / debt | ~$100bn / $39.7bn |
| Backlog | $47.5bn |
| EV/sales TTM | ~92x |
| EV/sales 2027e | ~18x |
| IPO | Jun 12, 2026 at $135 |
| Q3 results | ~Nov 3, 2026 |
Deliberately no backtest edge: since the IPO there have been only two MACD crosses, no RSI extremes and no SMA crossovers. Any statistical claim would be anecdotal – so we show no hit rates here rather than false precision.
