Methodology

Hybrid: DCF, SOTP & Graham-Dodd

Tesla reports Automotive and Energy separately, so a sum-of-the-parts view complements the group DCF. Gross margin of 18.9% (below 60%) → Graham-Dodd weighted equally. Result: DCF $37 / 56 / 121, SOTP $28 / 46 / 64, Graham-Dodd $22–68 – all far below the share price.

Update Oct 16: Is the analysis still current?

The analysis dates from Oct 9 (close Oct 8: $375.00). No new quarterly figures have been released since, so the fundamental and valuation sections remain valid. The technical picture has moved, though:

  • Price down 5.4% to $354.72. The close is now below the 50-day SMA ($359.5) and right on the line we had defined as the decision level ($353–354.5: SMA50 + 61.8% Fibonacci). Weekly low $349.33.
  • Momentum has turned. The fresh MACD bullish cross from Oct 8 has been undone (MACD 1.41 below signal 3.51), RSI 42.2. The price is approaching the lower Bollinger band ($349.6).
  • New headlines. Barclays sees a possible Tesla-SpaceX merger before Tesla's annual meeting (due by Dec 6), estimating ~0.7 SpaceX shares per Tesla share – unconfirmed, nothing signed. Separately, US regulator NHTSA is probing Robotaxi/Cybercab over alleged speeding in school zones.
  • Market backdrop cooler. VIX jumped from 15.2 to 20.0 amid a Nasdaq sell-off. The 10-year Treasury eased slightly (5.22% → 5.10%), a small relief for a long-duration stock like Tesla.

Verdict: The analysis is current enough. The "recovery was just a counter-move" scenario has gained weight; a close below $353 would confirm it. The decisive date remains the Q3 report on Oct 21 after the close.

Fundamentals vs. Technicals

Fundamentals: growth without earnings power

Q2 revenue +25.5% ($28.24bn), Q3 deliveries of 486,532 beat consensus. But: operating margin 5.7 → 4.2 → 1.4% over three quarters, ROIC down from 21.7% (2022) to 3.0% (2025), Q2 FCF –$1.09bn as capex doubled (2026 guidance: > $25bn). Valuation rises while returns and margins fall.

Technicals: three horizons, three directions

Long term in an uptrend regime (SMA100 above the 200-week line for 77 weeks), medium term in a correction (weekly death cross Apr 3, daily below a falling SMA200), and short term the rebound from the July low ($298) has stalled. A buy signal here would be counter-trend with elevated risk.

Valuation: all models at a glance

ModelBearBaseBull
DCF (owner FCF, WACC 13.2%)$36.5$55.7$120.5
SOTP (Energy + Auto/Services + cash)$28$46$64
Graham-Dodd (EPS $1.08, Y 6.22%)$22$45$68

DCF: owner FCF TTM $8.41bn (OCF − depreciation as maintenance capex − SBC), faded linearly to the terminal rate over 10 years, net cash $27.4bn, 3.95bn shares. The gap to the share price (~$330 per share, roughly $1.3tn of market value) is option value for Robotaxi/FSD, Optimus and AI. WACC sensitivity (base): 10% → $82, 8% → $115.

Key Chart Levels

Support $353–355
July low $298
Resistance 1 $389–391
Resistance 2 $410.6

Support: SMA50 and 61.8% Fibonacci of the $445 → $298 move. Resistance 1: 38.2% Fibonacci coinciding with the SMA200 – a weekly close above it would end the medium-term correction. Chart levels, not a trading recommendation.

Context Check (Macro)

With a beta of 1.9 and more than 50% of DCF value in the terminal value, Tesla is an extreme long-duration stock: every rate move hits disproportionately. The 10-year Treasury rose 43bp to 5.22% between early September and the analysis date and stands at 5.10% on Oct 16. The VIX jumped from 15.2 to 20.0 within a week – risk-off hits high-beta names first.

Next catalyst: Q3 results on Oct 21, 2026 (after the close; consensus EPS $0.46, revenue $27.9bn – flat versus $28.1bn a year ago). The key question: is a 16–17% gross margin the new normal?

The Devil's Advocate

"No classic model justifies the price – but the long-term regime has been intact for 77 weeks, and the market is valuing a platform, not a car dealer."

1. The options are real, not just fantasy

More than 500 robotaxis operate in Texas, around 1.5 million customers pay for FSD, and storage deployments reached 13.7 GWh in the quarter. A DCF on today's business, by definition, does not capture these revenue streams.

2. Balance sheet and growth carry the investment phase

Net cash of roughly $27bn funds the capex cycle without a capital raise. Revenue grew 25.5% in Q2 and Q3 deliveries clearly beat consensus – this is not a shrinking business.

3. The backtest does not argue for a short

The weekly death cross (SMA10/40) has historically meant underperformance, not losses, for Tesla (n=16: +2.7 / +6.1 / +4.2% after 4/8/12 weeks). Weeks in the downtrend regime even beat the baseline – though with only one bear phase in the sample.

Backtest Highlight

On a daily basis, Tesla's MACD bullish cross (n=51) shows only a weak, inconsistent edge (+0.6 / −0.7 / +1.5pp vs. baseline after 5/10/20 days) – so the buy signal of Oct 8 was never statistically robust and has since been undone. The weekly death cross (n=16) historically meant underperformance, but not losses.
